Frequently Asked Questions

1.

WHAT IS A MODERN STREETCAR?

A modern streetcar rides on fixed rail tracks in the street and are normally powered by overhead electrical wires.  Modern streetcar have low-floor boarding for easy access.  Modern streetcars are similar to light-rail (MetroLink) in many ways, except modern streetcars normally run in the street with traffic and have frequent stops, similar to the function of a bus.

2.

HOW OFTEN WILL THE ST LOUIS STREETCAR RUN?

The modern streetcars will run every 10-15 minutes following Metro's hours of operation.

3.

WHAT WILL BE THE FARES?  WILL IT WORK WITH METRO'S SYSTEM?

The fare structure will be seamless with Metro's fare structure for MetroLink and MetroBus.  One pass will allow boarding on MetroLink, MetroBus, and the St. Louis Streetcar.

4.

HOW WILL THE ST LOUIS STREETCAR AFFECT THE TRANSIT SYSTEM?

From the Feasibility Study, the St. Louis Streetcar is estimated to have 7,700 daily riders and add 2,700 new riders to the transit system increasing ridership on MetroLink.

5.

WHAT IS THE STREETCAR CONNECTING?

The St. Louis Streetcar with the Phase 1 routes will connect 136,000 jobs, 38,000 residents, and 10 million tourists.

6.

WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF PHASE 1?

From the Feasibility Study, the St. Louis Streetcar Phase 1 is projected to create development worth $540 million in the first five years and $2.1 billion over 20 years.

7.

WHAT WILL IT COST TO BUILD PHASE 1 - Starter Lines?

From the Feasibility Study, the total capital cost is estimated to be between $218 million and $270 million.  Federal financial support potentially up to 50% of total.

8.

HOW WILL LOCAL FUNDING BE RAISED?

A Transportation Development District (TDD) is proposed for the corridors for local capital and operations.  Farebox revenues, sponsorships, and other sources will also contribute to annual costs.

9.

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?

The St. Louis Streetcar must now complete a federally required study for Phase 1 of the St. Louis Streetcar's social, environmental, and economic impact.  Local funds for this next study have been raised, but additional funds are needed.  In April, an application was entered for Department of Transportation TIGER planning funds, and we are awaiting an announcement this fall.  This study will take about a year to complete.

10.

IF ALL GOES WELL, WHEN COULD WE BE RIDING THE ST LOUIS STREETCAR?

If all goes well and we are able to stick to our time line with our next study and then engineering and design, the time line shows construction starting in 2019 with Phase 1 of St. Louis Streetcar opening and running in 2021/2022.
